❗Apple's Research Says AGI Is Not Close
+ Humanoid that can do your chores, First AI engine for game production, and a rare blog post from Sam Altman on the future of AI

A quiet war is unfolding between hype and reality and this week, we saw both collide.
Apple just dropped a research paper called “The Illusion of Thinking” — a direct shot at the AI hype cycle, arguing today’s top models only pretend to reason and collapse under real complexity. Meanwhile, 1X’s humanoid robots are now doing chores in homes, thanks to their new on-device AI, Redwood.
Tencent just unveiled Hunyuan‑Game, a full-stack AI engine that generates entire games in real time, including assets, animations, and gameplay video. And Sam Altman posted a rare blog about how the singularity might actually arrive.
Let’s dive in.
“A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human.”

Apple’s AI Research Just Hit the AGI Kill Switch
Days before WWDC, Apple released one of the most damning AI papers of 2025 and it flips the AGI hype train on its head.
The takeaway? Today’s “reasoning” models including GPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek, don’t actually reason. They collapse when tasks get hard. They mimic logic only to a point, then bail out, even when they still have compute left.
🔍 What Apple Found
1. Core Failure Modes
Breakdown under complexity: Models do fine on easy puzzles, improve on medium ones, but completely collapse when the task gets hard. Even with the correct answer.
Reasoning peaks, then quits: As puzzles get tougher, models actually put in less effort, despite having more tokens and computing power available.
Hallucinations increase with complexity: The more “reasoning” a model claims to do, the more it confidently generates falsehoods.
2. Illusion of Intelligence
They don’t think — they match: These systems rely on patterns from training data, not logic. They simulate reasoning, not perform it.
Step-by-step ≠ understanding: Chain-of-thought outputs look smart, but fall apart when the puzzle changes even slightly.
Benchmarks are flawed: Most AI evaluations are too predictable, too contaminated, and no longer reveal real reasoning skill.
3. Surprising Contradictions
Simple models win sometimes: In low-complexity tasks, non-reasoning models often outperform the more advanced ones.
Feeding them solutions doesn’t help: Even when handed the algorithm (like Tower of Hanoi code), models still fail to scale.
💡Why It Matters
This paper doesn't just critique one model; it goes through an entire class of frontier LLMs. Apple shows that current evaluation methods overstate how intelligent today’s AI really is. And while competitors race to market with AGI-flavored products, Apple’s framing is different: less hype, more rigor.
It also hints at Apple’s positioning ahead of WWDC: not building the “smartest” AI, but the safest, most efficient, and most grounded in reality.

Humanoids
Redwood by 1X: A Real AI Brain for Home Robots
1X is the robotics company backed by OpenAI that's building humanoid robots for the real world have now they’ve released Redwood, the AI system that powers them.
Their two main robots, NEO and EVE, are full-body humanoids designed for everyday environments — think homes, offices, and warehouses. They can walk, open doors, pick up objects, and eventually assist with real tasks like fetching items or helping around the house.
⚠️ Redwood runs exclusively on 1X’s in-house robots (NEO and EVE), which are still in internal testing. There’s no public release date or pricing yet .
🔧 What is Redwood?
Redwood is a vision-language model trained on robotics data, not just text or images. It translates what the robot sees and hears into precise, physical actions.
160M parameters, runs locally at ~5Hz
Integrated with a voice pipeline (speech → command → action)
Trained on both human demos and autonomous behavior
Controls full-body motion — not just hands or arms
👀 What can the humanoids do right now?
Pick up bottles, even if it hasn’t seen that exact one before
Open doors with full-body movement (leaning, pulling, bracing)
Navigate new homes without retraining
Take spoken commands and act on them
Do all of this without internet — runs fully on-device
It's trained on thousands of hours of robot demos and real-world actions, not just internet data.
💡 Reality check
Most robots today are either stuck in labs or rely on the cloud. Redwood is different. It runs locally, in real time, with no lag — and it’s built for the home, not the warehouse. This means true, privacy-safe, at-home robotics could finally be viable, not 10 years from now, but soon.

First AI Engine for Full-Stack Game Production
Recap on Tencent Hunyuan Game: the first industrial-grade AIGC engine and AI-model series for game asset generation.
Beyond the features currently available in the Hunyuan Game platform, the team is actively developing more capabilities (many not yet live). These advancements

The first AI engine built for full-stack game production is here.
Tencent just unveiled Hunyuan‑Game — a generative AI system that creates game assets from scratch, including images, videos, animations, and even input-driven interactions. No more repurposed general models. This one’s trained on billions of game visuals and built specifically for studio-grade production.
⚠️ Some materials are in Chinese, so you’ll need to run translations to fully explore it.
🎮 Inside the System
Image generation for characters, scenes, transparent sprites, and effects
Five custom video models for looping animation, rotation, real-time response, and more
Massive, curated dataset tuned for game visuals with human-in-the-loop scoring
Outperforms Midjourney Pro on alignment, consistency, and stylization
Real-time generation triggered by gamepad inputs — like playing while prompting
🛠️ What You Can Actually Use It For
Instantly generate concept art, sprites, UI, and full character sheets
Animate characters and effects with clean loops — no rigging or manual keyframes
Prototype game mechanics with AI-generated visuals that respond to input
Rapidly test art styles, FX variations, or environmental layouts at scale
Build trailers, dynamic cutscenes, or marketing assets — all from prompts
Whether you’re a solo dev or a full studio, this helps shifts content creation from hours to minutes. From character art and VFX to trailers and real-time in-game content, this system reshapes how games are built. Studios that learn to integrate AI like this will have a serious advantage over those still relying on manual workflows.
Sam Altman
The Gentle Singularity
In a rare blog post, Sam Altman shares a personal and surprisingly hopeful perspective on the path to AGI. He argues that while the singularity sounds dramatic, it could actually arrive quietly — not as a rupture, but as a gentle curve of exponential progress that reshapes the world in a way we can manage.
He’s optimistic that we’ll navigate it well — not by avoiding risk, but by preparing early, adapting fast, and staying grounded in human values. It’s a calm, clear-minded take from the person sitting closest to the edge.
