👀AI Just Beat Us at Being Human

GPT-4.5 passes the Turing Test, tariffs threaten AI infrastructure, Midjourney adds voice-powered image generation, and Devin becomes an affordable AI dev assistant.

AI’s been busy.

GPT-4.5 just passed the Turing Test and fooled more people than actual humans (somewhere, Alan Turing is raising an eyebrow). Meanwhile, Trump’s proposed tariffs could send AI infrastructure costs through the roof—right as Big Tech is dropping billions into data centers.

Midjourney finally broke its silence with V7, unlocking voice-powered image creation, stunning realism, and blazing-fast drafts.

And Cognition’s Devin just got a major price cut, making one of the smartest AI dev tools accessible to solo builders and small teams.

Let’s dive in.

“A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human.”

GPT-4.5 Just Passed the Turing Test

Alan Turing, code-breaking machines used at Bletchley Park

What is the Turing Test?
The Turing Test, introduced by British mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing in 1950, is a way to measure whether a machine can act like a human in conversation.

How it works: A human judge chats with both a person and an AI—without knowing which is which. If the judge can’t reliably tell who’s the machine, or mistakes the AI for the human, the AI passes the test.

How GPT-4.5 Passed the Turing Test

In a recent study by researchers at UC San Diego, multiple AI models including GPT-4.5, LLaMA-3.1, GPT-4o, and the classic ELIZA were tested in five-minute chat sessions where participants had to guess whether they were speaking with a human or an AI. GPT-4.5 was given a specific human persona, a short description of a fictional character to adopt during the conversation, which helped it come across as more natural, relatable, and consistent throughout the chat.

Conversations from the study

Key findings: GPT-4.5 was mistaken for a human 73% of the time, even more often than real humans, who were correctly identified only 67% of the time. LLaMA-3.1 came in second, being identified as human 56% of the time. When given a specific persona to act out, GPT-4.5 became even more believable.

But it’s important to remember: GPT-4.5 isn’t actually “thinking.” It’s just extremely good at pattern-matching across massive amounts of text—and it’s now realistic enough to fool people.

POLITICS

Trump’s Tariffs Could Reshape AI Infrastructure Spending

Trump’s proposed tariff plan includes a 10% tax on all imports and a 60% tariff on Chinese goods. That hits Big Tech hard. Core data center components like steel, transformers, cooling systems, and power units are mostly imported. When those costs rise, so does the price of building and scaling AI infrastructure.

Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Oracle, and others are pouring close to $1 trillion into AI buildouts. Microsoft plans to spend $80B, Amazon over $100B, and Alphabet $75B. OpenAI and SoftBank are also backing a $500B project called Stargate, focused on advanced AI data centers.

In the short term, Big Tech might absorb the extra cost. But if tariffs stay in place, those expenses could shift to customers, slowing enterprise adoption and forcing companies to rethink their AI plans. Nvidia and other chipmakers have already seen stock drops, signaling real concern from investors.

What’s the outlook?
Some analysts believe this could push companies to invest more in domestic production and rethink how they build infrastructure. Over time, that shift could help lower costs and strengthen supply chains. But in the near term, tariffs are a drag, slowing progress and adding pressure to the already expensive race to scale AI.

ALPHA DROP

(Where we spotlight one powerful tool or feature to help you stay ahead.)

Midjourney Releases V7 After a Year of Silence

Midjourney just dropped V7, its first new image model in over a year—now in public alpha. It brings sharper details, better realism, faster generation, and even voice-based image creation.

What’s new:

  • Voice Mode: Talk to generate and edit images in seconds—hands-free creation is here.

  • Realism: More lifelike skin, textures, and lighting.

  • Accuracy: Improved rendering of hands, faces, and complex details.

  • Prompt Handling: Smarter responses to what you're actually asking for.

  • Personalization: Rate ~200 images to train it to your style.

  • Draft Mode: Create images 10x faster at half the cost, then upscale when ready.

How to use it:

  1. Sign up
Go to midjourney.com and create an account.

  2. Choose where to use it
You can use Midjourney in two ways:

    • Web app: Just log in at midjourney.com and click "Create" to type your prompt.

    • Discord: Join the Midjourney server, then type /imagine followed by what you want the image to look like.

  3. Start generating
Type a description of what you want to see, like:
“A photo of a robot walking through a neon-lit city at night.”

  4. Use V7 features

    • Personalization: You can rate images to help the AI learn your style.

    • Draft Mode: Makes images faster and cheaper, perfect for testing ideas.

    • Enhance: After generating, you can upscale the image to a higher quality.
