First AI wrote your emails. Then your code. Now it’s your shoulder to lean on.

Harvard Business Review just revealed that ā€œtherapy and companionshipā€ is now the top generative AI use case, outpacing coding, content creation, and even brainstorming. People aren’t just using AI to get things done. They’re turning to it because they don’t have anyone else to turn to.

While AI fills emotional gaps for some, it’s also accelerating change across nearly every industry. FutureHouse launched the first public AI scientist platform. Duolingo swapped human course creators for AI to scale faster. And OpenAI quietly upgraded ChatGPT into a shopping assistant.

Let’s get into it.

ā€The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do."

AI’s Top Use in 2025? Companionship

Source: Harvard Business Review

According to a new Harvard Business Review report by Marc Zao-Sanders, the most common way people use generative AI in 2025 is for therapy and companionship. Emotional support has overtaken creativity and output as AI’s leading use case. The shift is clear: people are using AI less to create more, and more to make sense of their lives.

šŸ” What people are actually doing with AI now:

  • #1 Therapy & companionship: The top use case in 2025. People are turning to AI for emotional support, reflection, and connection.

  • #2 Organizing your life (new): AI is becoming a personal systems coach, helping users structure their days, manage chaos, and follow through.

  • #3 Finding purpose (new): One of the fastest-rising uses — people are asking AI for meaning, direction, and clarity during uncertain moments.

  • #5 Generating code (for pros): Technical users are doubling down, using AI as a true engineering partner to write, debug, and improve code.

  • Generating ideas fell from #1 to #47: A steep drop. Users aren’t just chasing creativity anymore — they want substance, support, and real-world impact.

AI is stepping in where support is missing by helping people sort through thoughts, manage anxiety, and feel a little less alone. However, it doesn’t truly understand you. It reflects what you give it, and with memory on, it can start reinforcing emotional patterns. That loop might feel like a connection, but it can subtly shape how you think and feel.

Using AI for support can help; just stay aware of how it’s influencing your thoughts and beliefs.

Futurehouse: First Publicly Available AI Scientist

FutureHouse, a nonprofit backed by Eric Schmidt, just launched the first publicly available AI scientist platform. It offers a suite of research agents built specifically for science, capable of searching full papers, reasoning across datasets, and planning chemistry experiments. With over 38 million papers on PubMed and hundreds of thousands of clinical trials, science is overwhelmed by data. FutureHouse says its platform is built to break that bottleneck, and this launch is only the beginning.

The platform features four specialized AI agents:

  • Crow is a general-purpose agent designed to scan scientific literature and return clear, scholarly answers. It’s especially useful through the API for research teams looking to automate search and synthesis.

  • Falcon is built for deep literature reviews. It can process and summarize more scientific data than any other agent released so far, with access to advanced databases like OpenTargets.

  • Owl focuses on a single but powerful question: has anyone done this before? It helps researchers quickly identify prior work and avoid repeating studies.

  • Phoenix is still experimental, but it’s built for chemistry workflows. It can help plan experiments, suggest compounds, and simulate reaction outcomes using specialized tools originally developed in ChemCrow.

FutureHouse is not just building AI for science. It is opening up powerful, research-grade tools to anyone with a browser or an API key. If these agents work as claimed, they could accelerate discovery, close access gaps in research, and reshape who drives scientific breakthroughs.

Duolingo

AI Replaces Humans at Duolingo as 148 New Courses Go Live

Source: Duolingo

Duolingo just dropped 148 new language courses — its biggest content expansion ever. But this wasn’t built the usual way. Nearly all of it was created by generative AI. Behind the scenes, the company is phasing out human contractors, including many who helped shape the app’s voice and personality. Duolingo has now made it official: it’s an AI-first company.

⚔What’s new and powerful:

  • 148 new language courses released

  • Support for 28 interface languages including Spanish, French, Korean, and Mandarin

  • Expanded access to DuoRadio and Stories, now integrated into more beginner-level courses

  • Content created by AI, reviewed by humans

  • AI is now used to adjust difficulty levels, personalize learning paths, and scale globally

ā—What is really going on:

  • 140+ human contractors let go…many of whom shaped Duolingo’s tone and culture

  • Teams can only hire if the work can’t be automated

  • Employee performance now includes how effectively they use AI

  • Users are noticing: more robotic lessons, lower accuracy, and less cultural nuance

  • Social backlash is rising, with some calling the app ā€œsoullessā€ and deleting it

Duolingo isn’t just scaling faster — it’s rewriting how educational content gets made. This is one of the clearest examples of AI replacing human creators at a global scale. And for a company known for its quirky voice and charm, many users feel like something important is being lost.

OpenAI

OpenAI Just Launched a New Way to Shop Online

Source: OpenAI

You can now search for products and get visual results with prices, reviews, and direct links to buy, all without leaving the chat. These aren’t ads or sponsored listings. OpenAI says the results come from structured third-party data, and they’re not taking a cut from sales, at least for now.

You can ask super specific questions like ā€œbest headphones under $200ā€ and get custom results across categories like fashion, beauty, electronics, and home goods. It’s live for Free, Plus, Pro, and even logged-out users, with GPT-4o running it by default.

Soon, ChatGPT will also use memory to personalize recommendations based on your past chats, but only for Pro and Plus users. That part won’t roll out in the EU, UK, or a few other regions because of privacy rules.
